We grow so attached to our pets that we consider them friends, companions, or even part of the family! Of course, we want to ensure they are healthy so they live a long and happy life. That’s why pet nutrition is so important. Nutritious pet food can make a difference in your pet’s physical fitness, energy, and furry coat. Where do you buy pet food? How often do you buy it? How much does taste and quality mean to you when it comes to feeding your pet? We’ve conducted a survey with pet owners to find out the answers to these questions and more!
- The more people in your household, the more likely it is you will have a family member of the furry kind! Of those living in single-person households, 29% own cats, 27% have dogs and 10% have fish, birds, and other types of pets. In households composed of 5 or more people, 44% have cats, 54% have dogs, and 26% own other types of animals.

- More females are pet owners compared to males. Almost 39% of females are cat owners compared to only 29% of males. Similarly more females (46%) own dogs compared to males (31%).
- Married couples are more likely to have pets compared to those who are single. Of those who are partnered, 36% own a cat compared to only 32% of single panelists. When it comes to canines, 45% of couples own dogs compared to only 33% of unattached panelists.
- Where do people shop most often for pet food? About 36% shop at the grocery store and 33% at a mass merchandiser or warehouse store. On average, people spend about $10-20 dollars on each shopping trip to the pet store. Most people shop for pet food every 2-3 weeks (33%) or once every month (35%).
- Several aspects and features can influence purchase decisions in a pet food store. According to 65% of our panelists who own pets, the most important ones are: finding quality food, finding food their pet likes, and finding the best price.
- We asked panelists which services would make their visits to the pet food store more pleasant. The most popular answers were: a dog playground (18%), a grooming service (18%) and a veterinarian service (19%).
