Printing and Copying in the Workplace

Fifteen years ago, with the introduction of computers in the workplace, it was predicted that offices would eventually be paperless. They couldn’t have been more wrong! It seems like we are printing and copying more than ever. If you work in an office, you probably print or copy several documents on a daily basis. We conducted a survey to find out your behaviour when it comes to printing and copying at the office. What do you do when an error message appears? Do you print or copy personal materials? We’ve gathered some results we think you’ll find interesting.

  • When waiting for a printing job to complete, most people (25.3%) read other materials left near the printer or talk with colleagues about work (38.4%).

  • When it comes to the office printer/copier, it seems younger people are more forgetful! 31.5% of younger employees forget to pick up their documents from the office printer/copier, compared to only 7.3% of older employees.

  • Almost 12% of employees admit to using the office printer/copier more often than necessary to stretch their legs or take a break. This is more common among younger employees with 33.3% admitting to this behaviour.

  • If the office printer stops or if an error message appears, 70.4% try to fix it themselves. 71.3% of employees with a university degree will try to fix the printer, compared to only 55% of those with a high school education.

  • 62.2% of panelists admitted to printing personal materials or documents, such as driving directions or resumes. Younger employees are more likely to print personal documents compared to older employees (73.7% vs. 51.6%). Additionally, more university graduates (65.5%) print off personal materials, compared to only 55.5% of high school graduates.
