A recent Associated Press poll conducted by Ipsos Public Affairs found that just over one quarter of respondents had not read a book in the last year.
- Women aged 18-44 were more likely to have read a book in the last year (80% to 73% overall), as well as higher income households (87%) and those with a college degree (also 87%).
- Geographic differences were also evident, as respondents of the Mountain West were more likely to read (86% to 73% overall), while rural residents were less likely (66%).
Among those who have read a book in the last year, 41% said they have read between 1 and 5 books, with just over one quarter, (27%) saying they have read more than 15 books. The median number of books read was 6.5.

Demographic groups more likely to have read 1-5 books include: males, aged 18-29, and as well as those from middle-income households, and those with an education level of high school or less.

Respondents 65 and older were more likely to have read more than 15 books (33% to 27% overall), as well as those from New England (37%) and suburban women (34%)
