APT CEO Jeff Mann Pleased with Player Turnout

Speaking about the player turnout at the first event of the APT Asian Series Goa, CEO Jeff Mann said that he was very pleased. The organizers were uncertain about the turnout as the event was to be held at 4pm, unlike local tournaments, which usually take place late in the evening. He said that the enthusiastic participation of players from across the country was overwhelming.

The main INR 50,000 (₤615) buy-in event kicked off on Friday, the 11th of November and came to an end on the 14th. This was the biggest poker event to be organized in the country till date. In the no limit hold’em main event, which had two starting days, entry was permitted from day 1A to day 1B. Players started out with 15,000 chips and 45 minute blinds.

Winners at the Event

Phil Sanders, who enjoys playing real money slots as well as poker, won the INR 5,000 opening event and pocketed a price of INR 136,200 (₤1,702). In the heads-up, which over-ran the maximum 21 levels of the tournament, Sanders battled it out with Mihir Mehta. Finally, Mehta’s J-6 proved weak in front of Sander’s K-6. Mehta took home INR 80,100 as the first runner up. Vinay Suchede grabbed the third position pocketing a prize of INR 44,100.

Sanders won second title of the series by taking down the INR 250,000 buy-in High Roller event. This added another INR 1,235,000 to his wins. The INR 15,000 head hunter event was won by Amit Verma. He managed to outlast 75 opponents. Aditya ‘mastermind’ Argarwal won INR 10,000 no limit hold’em side event topping a field of 77.

Until recently, big money poker tournaments were a rarity. WSOP took place just a few times a year. Moreover the game was dominated by Americans. Asian Poker Tour’s efforts have played a significant role in popularizing poker at a global level.
