New Hearing on Online Gambling in Washington DC

The Revenue and Finance Committee in Washington DC has decided to hold a fresh hearing on online gambling in the capital. The Chairman of the committee, Jack Evans, has decided to cover two important issues during the hearing, including real money online gambling regulations and the present lottery contract in Washington DC. Three councilors in Washington DC have expressed their wish to revise both the issues under consideration.

Response from Democrat councilors

Evans has also received support from several Democrat councilors like the Government Operations Committee Chairman Muriel Bowser, who has also expressed concern regarding the DC lottery contract as well as the internet gambling bill. The approval of the internet gambling bill was considered to be irresponsible by many councilors. The incident has been worsened by the questions raised at the Inspector General’s inability to act appropriately. Tommy Wells, a Democrat Councilor, has announced that he will work to introduce a legislation to revoke the present internet gambling bill and the decision to legalize online gambling in Washington DC.

The DC Lottery contract

The Greek company in question, Intralot, formed a partnership with a US businessman who had not taken part in the official bidding process. He presently owns 51% of the lottery contract that is worth $38 million. The internet gambling bill was then sped along by a councilor working with a law firm whose clients benefited from the passing of the bill.

The implementation of the internet gambling law will be enforced only after a consultation round with the public. The consultation process is expected to start after the August vacations.

Press reports covered the incident of Charles J. Willoughby’s failure to act upon the request filed by two former officials to revisit the contract and check for irregularities. The main accused in this incident is the CFO Natwar M. Gandhi. Several oversights and irregularities were observed in the DC lottery contract but none were addressed until recently. The court will hold another hearing in September to address these concerns and resolve the irregularities in the DC lottery contract as well as the online gambling bill.
