Online Gambling Consultations in Washington End Positively

Public consultations conducted by DC gambling regarding legalization of online gambling in District of Columbia have ended positively in Washington DC. Although, some of the council members were distressed by the controversy that was attached to the legislation.

The bill was not debated before it was passed, as it was attached to a supplementary bill concerning the budget that was labeled ‘must-pass’. Another issue that has arisen is the involvement of Michael Brown, an independent councilor, who helped promote the bill with lobbyists who were pro online gaming.

In response to these problems, the city decided to conduct public consultations in all the 8 wards of Washington DC, in order to achieve a better understanding of the local peoples’ views regarding online gambling and the law in general. The consultations were scheduled to be held by DC Lottery, the agency that will implement the online gambling law if it is passed. Though the consultations did not begin as desired, reports now confirm that the community consultations have been completed.

Residents positive about online gaming

According to reports, the public briefings ended on a positive note for propagators of online gaming. Very few residents of the city voiced any concerns or dislike of the concept of online gaming if it is sponsored by the government. The most frequent questions were regarding the technology that was available and whether it was good enough to assure players of protection. Residents also wanted to know whether the security was capable of preventing problem gamblers and under aged players from participating. The reports stated that some people had even demanded reasons for why it was taking so long for the law to be implemented.

The principal concerns of the DC residents are concerning the distribution of the profits brought in by online gaming. The revenue estimated is 9 million dollars. In general, the Washingtonians expressed a desire for the funds to be used to alleviate poverty and to further education within the State. Most citizens found little difference between real money gambling online and playing the lottery. One resident reportedly said that he would rather gamble his money in his home town than do it at Atlantic City.
